The Coital Alignment Technique (CAT)
The Coital Alignment Technique (CAT) was developed by American psychotherapist Edward Eichel, designed to greatly improve a woman's chance of orgasm with genital intercourse as the clitoris is about 2-3 cm closer to the front of the woman's body than the vaginal opening and often is missed. For a woman to reach an orgasm they usually need clitoral stimulation not just a thrusting action. The CAT is achieved with a combined thrusting and grinding of both partners and requires a coordinated rocking movement that is gentle, rhythmic and slow-building.
With the CAT a relatively quick male orgasm can be achieved if so desired but if a man who fear losing control of his ejaculation he can control his thrusting and speed delaying his orgasm and prolonging the lovemaking. The CAT is a very intimate and romantic position with a loving and caring atmosphere, giving a more heightened sensual and emotional experience to both partners.
Couples can see the expressions of their partner and know that the they are being satisfied. This position offers full-body contact allowing a couple to kiss each other all over and exposes the woman nipples so they can be sucked or caressed which arouses many women. Little suppleness or flexibility, is required for this position, allowing the couple to remain relatively relaxed and avoid fatigue.
How it works:
To perform the CAT the couple get into the normal missionary positions but then moves further up the woman's body so that the base of his penis where it meets his pubic region can make contact with her clitoris as he thrusts. The woman's legs can be wrapped around the mans with her feet on his calves and if she rocks her pelvis in this position her clitoris should rub against the man's base of his penis, stimulating her internally and externally.
The movement in the CAT is a coordinated rocking; as the woman pushes up on the top of his shaft, he resists with less force than she pushes. Now, on the way back down, as he pushes down against her clitoris, she resists with less force than he pushes. It is less in and out movements like other positions and more rock 'n' roll. The man is actually shallow when the woman is getting the most stimulation on the downward push," Eichel says. For added sensuality use some massage oil, avoiding the pelvis if using a condom.
Some disadvantages to The CAT can be:
- the weight of the man on his partner can be uncomfortable for the woman, to reduce this the man can support himself on his arms and knees which can become tiring for him
- this position can be bad for men with premature ejaculation as it sometime produces a quick male orgasm
- the rubbing movement can turn into a uncomfortable friction which is not stimulating for either partner
